China and the United States have signed a protocol to extend their Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology for an additional five years, effective from August 27, 2024.
This move has been welcomed as a positive step in promoting scientific and technological progress, socio-economic development, and global cooperation.
According to Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, the extension of the agreement is in line with the interests of the people of both countries and meets the expectations of the international community.
“The essence of China-U.S. scientific and technological cooperation is mutual benefit and win-win,” Lin said.
The Agreement, which was first signed on January 31, 1979, has provided strong support for scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States. The extension of the agreement is seen as an important measure to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state.
Lin emphasized that the agreement would not only promote scientific and technological progress and socio-economic development of both countries but also help both sides address global challenges and improve human well-being around the world.
The US-China Business Council has applauded the extension of the science and technology agreement, citing its importance in promoting cooperation and mutual benefit between the two countries ².
