The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has commended Nigeria for its steadfast commitment to the One-China Principle, which recognises the PRC as the sole legitimate government of China and considers Taiwan an inalienable part of its territory.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian government for strongly supporting the one-China Principle, describing it as the cornerstone of China’s diplomatic relations globally.
“The One-China Principle is the political foundation for China’s diplomatic ties with other nations. Of the 183 countries with diplomatic relations with China, Nigeria has consistently adhered to this principle without ambiguity, and we deeply value this commitment,” he said.
The envoy noted that when President Tinubu paid a state visit to China in 2024, the two presidents issued a joint statement affirming that “there is only one China and Taiwan is part of it.”
“In the joint statement, the Nigerian government opposes any form of Taiwan independence, and supports all efforts of the Chinese government to achieve reunification,” Ambassador Yu recounted.
Ambassador Yu further noted that the 1971 United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution 2758 restored China’s seat in the UN and recognized the PRC as the sole legal representative of China, expelling Taiwan from the organisation.
He also clarified Taiwan’s historical status, stating that after being under Japanese colonial rule from 1895, the island was returned to China in 1945 following Japan’s defeat in World War II.
