Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, says the Belt and Road Initiative has brought tremendous opportunities for economic development, infrastructural enhancement and cultural exchange between Nigeria and China.
He made the disclosure while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 3rd Belt and Road China-Nigeria Economic and Trade Forum, held at the International Conference in Abuja on Thursday.
The speaker, represented by Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-China relations, stated that the collaboration between Nigeria and China through the Belt and Road Initiative represents a monumental opportunity for both nations, bringing about improved infrastructure, trade and cultural exchange.
His words, “The Belt and Road initiative, launched by China in 2013, aims to connect Asia with Europe, Africa and beyond through a series of infrastructural projects, such as roads, railways, ports and energy facilities. Nigeria, the largest economy in Africa, has become a key participant in this initiative seeking to improve its infrastructure, boost trade and enhance its overall development framework.
“One of the key aspects of this cooperation between Nigeria and China is enhancing transportation infrastructure. Through the Belt and Road Initiative, China has invested in the construction of roads and railways, providing Nigeria with better connectivity within the country and across borders. This has facilitated the movement of goods, services and people, increasing trade and economic integration.
“Furthermore, the collaboration between our two nations has led to significant advancements in the energy sector. China has been involved in constructing power plants and renewable energy projects in Nigeria, contributing to the country’s efforts to meet its energy demands and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. This has not only boosted Nigeria’s energy capacity but has also provided job opportunities for Nigerians.”
The speaker assured that the House of Representatives is committed to strengthening the bilateral and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and China through the instrumentality of appropriate lawmaking.
Earlier in his remarks, Mr Wang Yingqi, Minister Counsellor, Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China in Nigeria, said the Chinese government is committed to deepening its economic and trade relations with Nigeria in line with the principle of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation.
Organized by the China General Chambers of Commerce in Nigeria (CGCCN), the Trade Forum signalled the commencement of a two-day trade fair and exhibition, where Chinese firms and their Nigerian counterparts will engage in trade and economic exchanges.
