The China Media Group (CMG) recently held an impactful launch event for its global initiative, “Written in the Sky: My China Story,” at the Shehu Musa Yaradua Center in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
This gathering highlighted the cultural and linguistic ties between Nigeria and China, drawing a diverse audience from various sectors.
Among the prominent figures present were Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, Yu Dunhai, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, and Song Jianing, CMG Africa Bureau Chief. The event also saw participation from Chris Isigusor, the National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, along with diplomats, business leaders, academics, media professionals, and journalists.
In his address, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, underscored the critical role of media in shaping societal perspectives and fostering understanding between nations. Represented by Suleima Haruna, the Director of Public Relations and Protocols, he praised CMG for its commitment to delivering reliable news and impactful content for both countries.
Minister Idris highlighted the importance of balanced reporting that showcases national progress and called for the creation of inspiring narratives that encourage aspirations for future development. He emphasized the necessity of a united effort to combat misinformation, advocating for collaboration between Nigerian and Chinese media to tackle these challenges effectively.
Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu also addressed the attendees, noting that the event provided an opportunity to reflect on the significant influence of China on individuals and nations globally. He described the “Written in the Sky: My China Story” initiative as a compelling example of how storytelling can bridge cultural gaps.
Ambassador Yu Dunhai spoke on the recent advancement of China-Nigeria relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit. He expressed optimism about enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including media, as evidenced by the signing of several bilateral agreements.
The ceremony also celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, featuring the presentation of certificates to CMG Africa partners, cultural performances, keynote speeches, and a showcase of captivating entries for “My China Story.”
“Written in the Sky: My China Story” invites participants to share their heartfelt stories and unique experiences with China. The initiative received responses from over 73 individuals across the African continent, each contributing their distinct narratives.
