Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar says Nigeria is exploring a partnership with Beijing Automotive Group Company Limited (BAIC Group) to advance the country’s automotive industry.
Tuggar disclosed this during a meeting with top executives of BAIC Group in Beijing, China on Friday, June 21, 2024.
According to Tuggar, the discussions with the company centred on establishing a partnership aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s automotive capabilities.
“Nigeria is actively exploring a partnership with BAIC Group to foster economic growth, job creation and advance our automotive industry,” the minister said.
Tuggar stressed that the proposed partnership would leverage BAIC’s expertise in electric vehicles, infrastructure development, and technological innovation, promising mutual benefits for both nations.
“This initiative is pivotal for driving economic expansion, diversifying industrial capabilities, advancing infrastructure projects, promoting environmental sustainability through innovative technologies, expanding market access, nurturing local skills, and enhancing Nigeria’s trade balance,” he added.
BAIC Group, ranked 193rd among the world’s top 500 companies, is renowned for its significant contributions and pioneering joint ventures in the Chinese auto industry, including partnerships with global brands such as Jeep, Hyundai, and Mercedes-Benz.
Tuggar is on a week-long bilateral visit to China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The Nigerian delegation accompanying the minister includes government officials and prominent business leaders.
