As China’s first national big data comprehensive pilot zone, southwest China’s Guizhou Province has been promoting the big data industry as a backbone of its high-quality social and economic development.

The Big Data Expo 2023 will take place in Guizhou. Here are four things you might want to know about it.

What is the China International Big Data Industry Expo?

The China International Big Data Industry Expo (“Big Data Expo”), the world’s first exposition on the theme of big data, is co-sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Cyberspace Administration of China, and the Guizhou Provincial People’s Government.

Since its inception in 2015, the Big Data Expo has adhered to the philosophy of “global vision, national height, industrial perspective, and business standpoint.”

When and where will it be held?

Under the theme of “Integrating Digital and Real Economies, Unlocking the Future with Computing Power”, the Big Data Expo 2023 will be held from May 26 to 28 in Guiyang, the capital of southwest China’s Guizhou Province. A total of 325 enterprises from home and abroad have confirmed that they will attend the expo.

It will deliver a conference, an exhibition, a release, a contest, and business & investment negotiations.

Why has Guizhou become a hotspot for super-large and large data centres?

Guizhou is one of the regions with the largest number of super-large data centres globally.

Suitable climate, sufficient power and stable geological conditions have made it possible for Guizhou to take the lead in starting new digital infrastructure construction.

World-leading firms are grasping the opportunity to build super-large and large data centres in Guizhou.

To promote the law-based development of the big data industry, Guizhou has introduced local regulations since 2016 to regulate data acquisition, sharing, security and other basic issues.

Why is big data industry so important?

China rides the digitalization wave and seeks to tap into the full potential of the big data industry. A key project “East data, west computing” is part of China’s digital infrastructure.

It aims to have less developed inland regions store and process data transmitted from economically advanced eastern areas.

As one of the designated computing hubs, Guizhou plans to construct a “data corridor” that will link it with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle to better meet the computing needs of the two areas, according to officials.

Since Guizhou was approved to build the country’s first national big data comprehensive pilot zone in 2016, the province has become the frontrunner in the country’s big data industry.

After years of development, many data centers there have started to enjoy commercial success.

An increasing number of big data and other technological projects have boosted Guizhou’s digital economy.

According to the 14th Five-Year (2021-2025) Plan of Guizhou, the total output value of big data and electronic information industry in the province is expected to exceed 350 billion yuan (about 52 billion U.S. dollars) by 2025.

In 2023, Guizhou’s GDP is expected to grow by around 6 percent to reach 2.2 trillion yuan, with the digital economy accounting for around 40 percent of its GDP.
