His Excellency, Yu Dunhai, has officially arrived in Abuja to take up his role as the 15th Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the 7th Ambassador to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Upon his arrival on August 10, 2024, Ambassador Yu received a warm welcome from top officials at the Chinese Embassy, representatives from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and members of the diplomatic community, including leaders from Chinese enterprises operating in Nigeria.
In his inaugural remarks, Ambassador Yu highlighted the significance of the 53-year friendly bilateral relations between China and Nigeria. He expressed a strong commitment to collaborating with Nigerian counterparts to advance these ties, aiming to bring greater benefits to both nations.
Born in September 1973 in Jimo, Shandong Province, Ambassador Yu is a distinguished graduate of Renmin University of China. He joined China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1998 and has since held various influential positions.
His extensive career includes serving as a Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in the United States from 2014 to 2016 and as Counsellor and Deputy Director-General at the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2016 to 2020. Most recently, he served as Ambassador to Malta until June 2024.
Ambassador Yu has made significant contributions to international diplomacy, having worked at the Department of Arms Control and the Permanent Mission of China to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in the Netherlands. He has also directed media centres for notable summits, including the BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
With his robust background in international relations, there is optimism that under Ambassador Yu’s leadership, China-Nigeria relations will continue to thrive, fostering shared progress and prosperity in the years ahead.
