In a major political development, the Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano Emirates Council Law (repeal bill) 2024, effectively abolishing the establishment of 5 new Emirates in the state.
The repealed law, which was first assented to by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in December 2019, created five new Emirates – Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye. These new Emirates were granted jurisdiction over various local government areas within the state.
However, the newly passed Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law, 2024, has set aside all offices established under the previous law. Additionally, all district heads elevated or appointed under the repealed law are now required to revert to their previous positions.
The repeal bill was sponsored by the Majority Leader and member representing the Dala Constituency, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa.
