President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed retired Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau as Nigeria’s ambassador to China, bringing decades of military, academic and public service experience to one of the country’s most strategic diplomatic postings.

Born on March 14, 1954, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Dambazau built a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army before transitioning into public service and academia. He served in the military for more than three decades, rising through the ranks to become Chief of Army Staff between 2008 and 2010. During his tenure as army chief, he oversaw major reforms aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army.

Dambazau later entered partisan politics and played a role in the security architecture of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Following the victory of the party in the 2015 general elections, he was appointed Minister of Interior by President Muhammadu Buhari. He served in the position from November 2015 to May 2019, supervising key agencies including the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Federal Fire Service.

Beyond his military and political roles, Dambazau is widely regarded as a scholar of security and criminology. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Kent State University in the United States and later earned a PhD in Criminology from the University of Keele in the United Kingdom. His academic interests focus on national security, border management and crime prevention.

Over the years, he has also contributed to research and policy discussions on security governance. He has authored several books and scholarly works on criminology, criminal justice and conflict management, while also participating in international policy forums and research institutions.

Dambazau has received several honours in recognition of his service to Nigeria, including the national award of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR). He also holds traditional titles, including the Baraden Kano, reflecting his influence in northern Nigeria’s traditional institutions.

Following his retirement from active military service, the former army chief remained active in academia and institutional leadership. He currently serves as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Capital City University in Kano, where he contributes to higher education development and research on regional security issues.

His appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to China is seen as part of efforts by the Tinubu administration to deploy experienced figures to key diplomatic missions. China remains one of Nigeria’s most important economic partners, with cooperation spanning infrastructure development, trade, technology and investment.

With his background in security, governance and international engagement, Dambazau is expected to play a significant role in strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and China, particularly in areas of economic cooperation, strategic partnership and security dialogue.
