President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, has expressed the chamber’s readiness to establish a strategic partnership with the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria (CGCCN) for the mutual benefit of both entities.
During an exclusive interview held at the ACCI headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Obegolu emphasized the importance of this partnership in enhancing trade activities and attracting more Chinese investors to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
“We have contacted the China Chamber of Commerce to arrange a courtesy visit. We aim to engage in discussions that will lead to a mutually beneficial relationship. While we represent our people, the China Chamber represents their interests. We also advocate for the interests of certain Chinese firms who are members of ACCI,” Obegolu stated.
He further highlighted the collaborative opportunities that lie ahead, expressing eagerness for a meeting with the China Chamber of Commerce leadership to explore avenues that will benefit their respective members. “Our primary goal is to serve our members and promote trade and commerce. I eagerly anticipate formalizing our partnership with the China Chamber of Commerce,” he added.
Addressing the industrialization strategies for the FCT, Chief Obegolu emphasized the necessity for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to reassess land allocations in the Idu Industrial Layout. He raised concerns about many allottees being politicians rather than industrialists, hindering the development of allocated plots.
To achieve successful industrialization in the FCT, Chief Obegolu stressed the importance of engaging with the Ministry of FCT and implementing measures to ensure the timely development of industrial lands. He underscored the need for strict regulations on land sales in industrial districts and emphasized accountability in land usage to foster genuine industrial growth in Abuja.
“We must engage the Ministry of FCT if we have any fair chance of succeeding in our vision to industrialize the FCT. But without a commitment from the ministry, we cannot achieve much.
“It is essential to distinguish between genuine industrialists and non-committal allottees, particularly those with political affiliations. We must prioritize the interests of bona fide industrialists to realize Abuja’s potential as an industrial hub,” Obegolu added.
