As part of activities marking the 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival, the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria (CGCCN) hosted a Media Salon to discuss the outcomes of the recently concluded Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit held in Beijing from September 4-6, 2024.
The event, themed “President Xi’s Ten Partnership Actions for Modernization: Impact for Nigeria and Africa,” took place at the Silk Road Restaurant and attracted a diverse audience, including scholars, foreign policy experts, media executives, and journalists.
Foreign policy experts emphasized the significance of Nigeria’s participation in the summit, highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping. The discussions revolved around President Xi’s speech at the summit and the elevation of the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and China to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).
During the FOCAC summit, 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, covering critical areas such as energy, human capital development, security, and media cooperation. Both countries also agreed to collaborate on high-quality Belt and Road Initiative planning and the Global Development Initiative.
Subnational governments in Nigeria signed investment agreements with Chinese enterprises for key projects in rail, petrochemicals, iron and steel, energy, and smart city development.
Dr. Olalekan Babatunde, a Research Fellow at the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution in Abuja, described the elevation of Nigeria-China relations to a CSP as a game changer that will enhance trade, economic growth, regional security, cultural exchange, and global governance in Nigeria. He emphasized that the partnership is not solely about economic benefits but also about fostering mutual trust and confidence. “This elevation means that Nigeria and China have elevated their partnership to a higher level, and it will benefit the generality of Nigerian people,” he stated.
Mr. Charles Onunaiju, Director of the Centre for China Studies, noted that the outcomes of the Beijing summit, encapsulated in the Declaration and Action Plans, delineate the visions of China and Africa and the practical steps necessary for realization. He added that President Tinubu’s state visit to China resulted in several signed MoUs with Chinese enterprises, further solidifying bilateral cooperation.
Onunaiju also highlighted the joint statement between Nigeria and China aimed at establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership and building a high-level China-Nigeria community with a shared future, outlining the core principles and strategic roadmap for achieving the objectives stated in the agreement.
Prof. Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, Director of Contemporary Africa-China Research, pointed out that one of the most significant achievements of President Tinubu’s visit was the signing of an MoU focused on enhancing Nigeria’s energy security, a critical factor for economic growth and investment.
“In a global context where energy sustainability is increasingly critical, this agreement allows Nigeria to explore the peaceful application of nuclear energy. Currently, South Africa is the only African country utilizing nuclear power, but with this new partnership, Nigeria is set to become the second,” he said.
Prof. Ibrahim expressed optimism that this partnership with China would facilitate a broader modernization campaign crucial for Nigeria’s development, leading to significant improvements in the nation’s infrastructure.
Dr. Austin Maho, Publisher of Daybreak Nigeria and the Dragon Magazine, addressed the issue of misinformation surrounding China. He noted that China has suffered from a plethora of fake news, a consequence of global geopolitics and media imperialism.
Maho urged media practitioners to verify information through reputable sources and emphasized the importance of critical thinking and media literacy in combating fake news and fostering a nuanced understanding of China.
As Nigeria and China embark on this new chapter of cooperation, the outcomes of the FOCAC summit signal a promising future for bilateral relations, with the potential to drive significant advancements in various sectors and enhance the overall development of Nigeria.
