The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has strongly refuted allegations circulating in parts of the international media claiming that Chinese mining companies are involved in illegal mining activities and the payment of protection money to militia groups in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, the Embassy described the claims as “completely baseless” and expressed “firm opposition and strong dissatisfaction” over what it called false accusations linking Chinese firms to criminal activities, including terrorism financing.
The allegations reportedly stem from a bill introduced by certain members of the United States Congress, which accused China of engaging in unlawful mining operations in Nigeria and making payments to armed groups. Some media outlets subsequently reported on the bill and, according to the Embassy, amplified the claims by suggesting that Chinese mining companies were funding terrorism.
Rejecting the claims in their entirety, the Embassy called on relevant media organisations to immediately stop disseminating what it termed misinformation.
The statement reiterated that the Chinese government requires its companies and citizens operating abroad to comply strictly with the laws and regulations of host countries. It stressed that there is zero tolerance for any enterprise found to be involved in illegal or criminal activities.
According to the Embassy, the vast majority of Chinese mining firms operating in Nigeria have maintained strong records of compliance with local laws and regulatory requirements. It noted that many of the companies contribute to host communities through corporate social responsibility initiatives, environmental protection efforts, and job creation.
The Embassy further stated that Chinese mining operations have contributed positively to bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and China, particularly in the solid minerals sector, while supporting local economic growth and employment opportunities.
Reaffirming China’s respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, the statement said Beijing supports Abuja’s efforts to strengthen governance and regulatory oversight in the mining sector. It also disclosed that the Embassy maintains regular communication and cooperation with relevant Nigerian authorities on issues relating to mining and security.
Emphasising security concerns, the Embassy pointed out that Chinese mining enterprises have themselves been victims of terrorist attacks and criminal activities in Nigeria. It added that Chinese firms remain willing to cooperate with Nigerian authorities in efforts to enhance national security and stability.
The statement called on all parties to refrain from spreading unverified claims capable of undermining the longstanding relationship between both countries. It urged Nigerian media and stakeholders to approach issues concerning China-Nigeria mining cooperation objectively and to guard against attempts by “individuals with ulterior motives” to damage bilateral ties.
