The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria hosted a reception to commemorate the 97th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in Abuja.
The event was attended by distinguished guests including Zhang Yi, Chargé D’affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Nigeria’s Minister of Defense Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, military officers from various countries, and members of the diplomatic community.
In his welcome address, Zhang Yi traced the historical roots of the PLA back to the Nanchang uprising initiated by the Communist Party of China on August 1, 1927. He emphasized that the uprising marked the establishment of a new type of armed forces dedicated to national independence and the people’s liberation.
Zhang reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening reforms and fostering an open world economy, which he believes will pave the way for enhanced global cooperation, particularly between China and Nigeria.
“China resolutely upholds the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” he said, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to peaceful development and global initiatives.
As the celebration coincided with the 53rd anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Nigeria, Zhang expressed optimism about future collaborations. He expressed delight and anticipation of President Bola Tinubu’s participation at this year’s Beijing Summit of the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
He also outlined recent military cooperation between the two nations, which has included successful exchanges in defence, arms trade, and training. Notable visits from PLA officials and joint naval exercises have further solidified the partnership between the armed forces of China and Nigeria.
Minister of Defense Mohammed Badaru Abubakar praised the PLA for its evolution into a formidable force dedicated to safeguarding China’s sovereignty and development. He noted that the PLA’s journey reflects resilience, discipline, and a commitment to national pride—qualities that Nigeria deeply admires.
Abubakar acknowledged the robust friendship between Nigeria and China, emphasizing that cooperation in defence and security has been instrumental in addressing common challenges and enhancing mutual understanding.
“Nigeria has always cherished and values the robust partnership we share with China, particularly in defence and military cooperation,” he stated.
The Minister highlighted the significance of knowledge exchange, training, and technology transfer between the armed forces of both nations, which he believes is crucial for building stronger military institutions.
