Professor Wu Dong, a Chinese expert from the Beijing Sports University, says Nigerians should learn Tai Chi Martial Arts because of its benefits, especially in the areas of mental and physical health.
Dong, who is also a Martial Arts Instructor, made the disclosure at a one-day Tai Chi Martial Arts training demonstration held at the Art Exhibition Pavilion in Abuja on Wednesday.
The event, organized by the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, was graced by the presence of Li Xuda, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Fatima Gambo, Director of Co-Curricular at the FCT Secondary Education Board, Tai Chi instructors and practitioners, educators, students, as well as Nigerian and Chinese nationals.
Prof. Dong in his address said everyone should be interested in learning Tai Chi because it offers a wide range of benefits, including improved physical health through enhanced balance, flexibility, and strength. It also promotes mental well-being by reducing stress, fostering relaxation, and increasing mindfulness.
“Furthermore, Tai Chi serves as a valuable form of self-defence and can enhance focus and concentration. By learning Tai Chi, individuals can cultivate a holistic approach to health and wellness, benefiting both their body and mind,” Prof. Dong added.
Earlier in his remarks, Li Xuda, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, said the Tai Chi class would help strengthen cultural ties between Nigeria and China.
Li said: “This event provides a platform for cultural exchange, showcasing an important aspect of Chinese heritage and tradition. Through the practice and demonstration of Tai Chi, participants in Nigeria can gain insight into Chinese culture, promoting mutual understanding and appreciation. Additionally, the event can serve as a means of fostering people-to-people connections and enhancing cultural diplomacy, ultimately contributing to the deepening of relations between Nigeria and China.”
Hajiya Fatima Gambo, Director of Co-Curricular at FCT Secondary Education Board, lauded the Chinese government for its continuous support to Nigeria in the field of education and human capital development. She also encouraged Nigerians to embrace Tai Chi due to its numerous health benefits, therapeutic effects, and its value as a form of self-defence.
The practice of Tai Chi can be traced back to the mid-17th century in a small village called Chenjiagou in China’s Henan Province before spreading to over 150 countries and regions, attracting millions of practitioners. In 2020, Tai Chi was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
