The China Mining Federation of Nigeria has dismissed as false and misleading recent media reports alleging that Chinese mining companies are infiltrating Nigeria’s solid minerals sector and engaging in activities that undermine the country’s security, economy, and environment.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Federation described the allegations as baseless and unsupported by facts.
According to the Federation, Chinese mining companies operating in Nigeria conduct their activities in strict compliance with Nigerian laws and regulations, in line with the guidance of the Chinese government. It stated that these companies work closely with relevant Nigerian authorities to strengthen governance and transparency in the mining sector.
The Federation emphasized that beyond legal compliance, Chinese firms have made investments aimed at supporting Nigeria’s industrial transformation in the solid minerals industry.
“These investments include the establishment of local processing facilities, job creation for Nigerian workers, and skills transfer initiatives designed to increase local value addition rather than exporting raw materials.
“These efforts have helped boost employment, retain greater economic value within Nigeria, and translate the country’s mineral resources into concrete development outcomes,” the statement noted.
On environmental and social concerns, the Federation said Chinese mining companies have been actively involved in community development initiatives, environmental protection measures, and corporate social responsibility programmes in their host communities. It added that such efforts reflect a commitment to sustainable mining practices and long-term partnership with Nigeria.
The Federation also firmly rejected claims linking Chinese mining companies to terrorism, describing them as “completely unfounded.”
It stressed that Chinese companies and nationals in Nigeria have, in fact, been victims of terrorist attacks and insecurity, and therefore share a common interest with the Nigerian government in promoting peace and stability.
“Chinese mining companies have always supported Nigeria’s efforts to safeguard national security and remain willing to cooperate with the authorities to ensure a safe and stable environment for both business and daily life,” the statement said.
Calling for responsible journalism, the Federation urged Nigerian media organizations and stakeholders to report on China–Nigeria mining cooperation objectively and fairly. It warned against the spread of misinformation that could damage bilateral relations and undermine long-standing cooperation between both countries.
The Federation reaffirmed its readiness to continue working with the Nigerian government and relevant stakeholders to deepen cooperation in the mining sector, support Nigeria’s economic and social development, and ensure that collaboration delivers mutual benefits to both nations.
