The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has undertaken an inspection tour of the Lagos 7th Axial Road, popularly referred to as the Lekki Port Access Road, reiterating the Federal Government’s determination to complete the critical project on schedule.
The minister was accompanied by senior officials and engineers from China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), the firm responsible for executing the project.
The 7th Axial Road is considered a strategic transport link intended to enhance logistics operations within the Lekki corridor, particularly for maritime and industrial activities. While moving through different sections of the site, Umahi examined the construction processes, engineering standards and structural components being deployed.
Speaking to journalists after the tour, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded so far, pointing to noticeable improvements in work coordination and the expansion of construction zones.
He praised the quality assurance measures observed on-site and encouraged the contractor to maintain the momentum. To fast-track delivery, he directed the project team to increase the deployment of heavy equipment and sustain high construction standards throughout the entire stretch of the road.
Addressing concerns surrounding the Lagoon Section, identified as Lot 1, Umahi confirmed that the initial bridge design would remain in place. The decision followed comprehensive geotechnical tests and soil investigations carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works in collaboration with independent consultants and CHEC engineers. According to the Minister, alternative design options were carefully reviewed before arriving at the final determination.
Upon completion, the Lagos 7th Axial Road is expected to significantly improve cargo movement and lower transportation costs, given its role as a primary access route to the Lekki Deep Sea Port and surrounding Free Trade Zones. The project is also projected to enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in regional and global trade.
Residents and businesses along the Lekki-Epe axis are anticipated to benefit from reduced traffic congestion and smoother movement of goods and commuters, factors expected to stimulate economic activities in the area.
Government officials further note that the highway will contribute to industrial expansion, attract investment inflows and create employment opportunities, strengthening Lagos’ standing as a major economic hub on the continent.
The Minister assured stakeholders that the Federal Government remains committed to resolving operational challenges and providing the necessary backing to ensure the project’s successful and timely delivery.
