Hon. Zainab Gimba, the representative for Bama/Ngaala/Kalabalge Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has urged the Nigerian government to implement tax exemptions for the tourism and hospitality sector.
Speaking at the 2024 Nigeria-China Seminar on Tourism, Hospitality, and Culture in Abuja on Tuesday, Gimba emphasized the need for a more favorable environment to attract investors and tourists alike.
“The government must consider tax exemptions for the tourism and hospitality sectors to attract more investors and visitors. By doing so, we can unlock our untapped resources and values, benefiting not only Nigeria and China but the global community as well,” Gimba stated.
Highlighting the significance of integrating Chinese and Nigerian cultures, Gimba noted that such collaboration could enhance employment opportunities and promote the assimilation of diverse cultural values. With Nigeria home to over 250 ethnic groups, she believes showcasing this rich diversity can position the country as one of Africa’s most appealing tourist destinations.
Gimba also pointed out the lessons Nigeria can glean from China’s successful tourism industry. She expressed optimism regarding the interest shown by Nigerian youth in the cultural and hospitality sectors, as evidenced by their enthusiastic participation in the seminar.
“Our youth are key to advancing tourism in Nigeria. By establishing platforms that enhance their awareness of cultural and hospitality advantages, we can empower them to engage in various trades and skills, leading to safe employment,” she noted.
The lawmaker encouraged young Nigerians to mobilize and complement government efforts in promoting the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
“Our youth can be both entrepreneurs and employees, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s development,” she added.
In his remarks, Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria said the seminar’s objective is to promote collaboration and exchange between Nigeria and China, aligning with the outcomes of the recent Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). He emphasized the importance of tourism as a catalyst for economic growth and job creation.
Co-hosted by the China Cultural Center and the Youth Tourism Development Organization (YTDO) Nigeria, the seminar featured various presentations, cultural and musical displays, and awarded prizes to winners of a tourism essay competition, highlighting the vibrant cultural exchange between Nigeria and China.
