China and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening people-to-people relations, cultural exchange and sports cooperation as officials, scholars and cultural enthusiasts gathered in Abuja for the Chinese Wushu (Martial Arts) Premium Exhibition.

The event, held at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, showcased the rich heritage and philosophical foundations of Chinese martial arts through a series of exhibitions and interactive sessions led by martial arts scholar Professor Wu Dong and his team from Beijing Sport University.

The exhibition featured four thematic displays: Wu Yuan – Drawing Meaning from Forms, First Techniques in Harmony with Nature; Martial Arts – Tempered Through Thousands of Hammers, Competing with Weapons; Wu Dao – The Way of Tai Chi, Fist and Fist Combine; and Martial Music – Practicing Martial Arts Together, Joy in Body and Mind.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Counsellor Yang Jianxing of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria described cultural exchange as a vital bridge for fostering mutual understanding among nations and promoting closer ties between peoples.

He said Chinese martial arts represent more than physical exercise, noting that they embody centuries of Chinese cultural values, philosophical wisdom and moral principles.

According to him, Wushu reflects ideals such as discipline, respect, harmony and self-cultivation, while also conveying the Chinese philosophy of peaceful coexistence and harmony between humanity and nature.

“The essence of martial arts is not about fighting but about promoting peace, moral character and self-improvement. Its deeper meaning lies not only in physical movements but also in cultivating virtue and understanding,” he said.

He noted that the exhibition was designed to provide Nigerians with an opportunity to experience Chinese martial arts firsthand through lectures, demonstrations and interactive activities, while serving as a platform for greater cultural exchange between the two countries.

The envoy said bilateral relations have continued to grow over the decades, extending beyond political and economic cooperation to include cultural and educational exchanges that have strengthened friendship between the two nations.

“The achievements of China-Nigeria relations are rooted not only in practical cooperation but also in the deep friendship shared by the peoples of both countries,” he said.

Also speaking, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the exhibition as a celebration of sporting excellence, cultural identity and international friendship.

Represented by the Commission’s Special Adviser on Legal, Strategy and Administration, Musa Ahmadu, Dikko said Wushu, like many traditional sports, carries the spirit and values of a people, promoting balance, discipline, respect, courage, self-control and excellence.

He noted that while Nigeria and China have built a strong relationship through trade, infrastructure development and economic cooperation, cultural and sports exchanges remain equally important in deepening ties between both nations.

“Sports speaks a universal language. It crosses borders, bridges differences and brings people together in a way that formal diplomacy sometimes cannot,” he said.

According to him, sports diplomacy provides a powerful platform for fostering stronger people-to-people connections, particularly among young people, while promoting mutual understanding and cultural appreciation.

Dikko commended the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Centre for bringing Wushu to Nigeria, saying the initiative provides Nigerians with an opportunity to experience an important aspect of Chinese culture while creating avenues for future cooperation in sports, education and cultural exchange.

He said the programme aligns with the National Sports Commission’s vision of repositioning sports as a tool for youth development, economic growth, international cooperation and cultural diplomacy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Nigeria has a young and talented population, while China possesses advanced sports systems and vast experience. There is a natural opportunity for both countries to work together in developing these areas,” he said.

Dikko added that both countries could explore exchange programmes, promote Wushu and other traditional sports among Nigerian youths, and deepen collaboration in sports medicine, research, athlete preparation and sports industry development.

He reaffirmed the National Sports Commission’s readiness to work closely with the Chinese Embassy, the China Cultural Centre and Beijing Sport University to strengthen bilateral cooperation through sports and cultural engagement.

The event attracted participants from various sectors and offered audiences an exploration of Chinese martial arts traditions, combining academic presentations, cultural performances and practical demonstrations.
