The 2026 China-Nigeria Fashion Show has provided a platform for cultural exchange and creative collaboration between Nigerian and Chinese fashion communities, with participants showcasing the rich traditions and contemporary expressions of both countries.
The event, held at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, featured a blend of Chinese and Nigerian fashion and dance displays, bringing together government officials, diplomats, fashion industry stakeholders, creatives and members of the media.
Speaking at the event, Cultural Counsellor and Director of the China Cultural Centre, Yang Jianxing, described fashion as a universal language capable of promoting cultural understanding and strengthening people-to-people ties.
He highlighted the rich traditions of Chinese clothing, including Hanfu, Tang-style attire, Qipao and Mamianqun, alongside Nigeria’s diverse fashion heritage, including Aso-Oke, Agbada, Buba, Iro and Gele.
Yang said the fashion show created an opportunity for Chinese and Nigerian aesthetics to interact, while promoting collaboration, innovation and growth in both countries’ creative industries.
He noted that 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of Nigeria-China diplomatic relations and the “China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges,” describing the occasion as an opportunity to deepen cultural understanding and cooperation.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Abdulkarim Ozi Ibrahim, represented by Mohammed Tukura, said fashion was a powerful tool for cultural exchange, economic growth and mutual understanding.
He said bringing Nigerian and Chinese creative communities together would create opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, innovation and economic growth.
The Permanent Secretary commended the China Cultural Centre for providing a platform for Nigerian and Chinese creatives to interact, adding that the Federal Government remained committed to creating opportunities for Nigerian creative talents to connect with international partners and audiences.
In his remarks, Chairman of the House Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, Hon. Kabir Ibrahim Tukura, said the event demonstrated that Nigeria-China relations extended beyond diplomacy, trade and economic cooperation.
He noted that Nigeria’s fashion and creative industries represented significant opportunities for young people, adding that partnerships with countries such as China could open new avenues for skills development, investment, creativity and cultural exchange.
