In a significant diplomatic development, the People’s Republic of China has pledged unwavering support for Nigeria’s industrialization and value-added manufacturing efforts.

The commitment was made during a meeting between a high-level Chinese delegation, led by Mr. Wu Peng, Director General of China’s Department of African Affairs, and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Mr  Peng said the primary objective of the visit was to lay the groundwork for potential ministerial and presidential visits later in the year, underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations.

He highlighted China’s commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructure development and economic growth. Specifically, he emphasized support for Nigeria’s industrialization drive and value-added manufacturing, identifying the battery-related minerals sector as one with significant potential for collaboration.

Mr Peng added that job creation and local economic empowerment were key themes that suggest a shift towards deeper economic integration.

The visiting delegation also lauded its existing involvement in major Nigerian projects, with particular emphasis on its recent loan to the railway project.

The Chinese delegation also pledged to support Nigeria’s aspirations on the global stage, especially on the country’s quest for increased African representation in the United Nations Security Council.

In response, Amb. Maitama Tuggar affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to infrastructure development and increased engagement in the Belt and Road Initiative. Both sides expressed a shared determination to build on the positive momentum generated by this visit.

Plans for a potential presidential trip to China and a reciprocal visit by Amb. Yusuf Tuggar to his Chinese counterpart were discussed, highlighting the mutual desire to strengthen diplomatic ties between the two nations.
