The President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Chief Emeka Obegolu, has called on leaders at all levels to use Nigeria’s Democracy Day as an opportunity to advance economic reforms, uphold the rule of law, and protect the freedoms that support business growth and innovation.

In a statement commemorating Democracy Day, Chief Obegolu acknowledged the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic journey and highlighted the essential link between democratic governance and economic development.

“Democracy is not only about political participation; it is also about economic inclusion, transparency, and accountability, all of which are vital to creating a thriving business environment,” he said.

While noting the progress made since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, Chief Obegolu emphasized the continued need for institutional reforms that can build investor confidence, enhance the ease of doing business, and support equitable growth.

He reaffirmed ACCI’s role as a strategic bridge between the government and the private sector, offering policy guidance and advocacy to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic and economic landscape.

“We urge the government to maintain focus on policies that reduce the cost of doing business, promote local content, empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and create opportunities for youth and women-led ventures. Democracy must translate into meaningful economic empowerment for all,” Chief Obegolu added.

The ACCI President commended Nigerians for their steadfast belief in democracy and expressed optimism that with sustained collaboration between the public and private sectors, the country can build a more inclusive and dynamic economy.

He further noted that the celebration of Democracy Day should inspire reflection and concrete action. He urged policymakers to deepen efforts in improving access to finance, simplifying regulatory frameworks, and ensuring policy consistency; all of which are crucial for promoting economic freedom.

“Economic freedom is the foundation of any true democracy. When businesses operate with confidence, and when individuals are empowered to innovate without undue constraints, then we can truly say democracy is delivering for the people,” he stated.

Chief Obegolu also stressed the importance of investing in digital infrastructure, vocational training, and youth-focused programs as tools to reduce unemployment and enhance national competitiveness.

Reaffirming ACCI’s ongoing commitment to shaping Nigeria’s economic future, he concluded, “As we mark Democracy Day, let us recommit to building institutions that safeguard civil liberties while fostering sustainable economic growth. The Abuja Chamber stands ready to partner with all stakeholders to move Nigeria forward.”
