The Federal Government of Nigeria yesterday signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Mutual Commitment Company (MCC) Limited, a Chinese firm, for the assembly of electric tricycles in the country. The event took place in Beijing, coinciding with the opening ceremony of the African-China Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit.
The MoUs were facilitated by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), under the Federal Ministry of Power. Representing Nigeria at the signing ceremony were the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, and the Managing Director of REA, Mr. Abba Aliyu.
Minister Adelabu expressed his optimism about the partnership, describing the day as memorable for Nigeria. He acknowledged the shared challenges between Nigeria and China, particularly in energy access and job creation.
He emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes the power sector as a catalyst for economic growth.
Highlighting the importance of energy access, Adelabu pointed out that nearly 40% of Nigeria’s population currently lacks reliable electricity. He advocated for a shift from a centralized power model to a distributed energy model to ensure that all Nigerians, especially those in rural areas, have access to energy. This approach, he noted, would also support local businesses, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities that often suffer from erratic power supply.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to transitioning to cleaner, sustainable energy sources, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 and 30% of energy generation from renewable sources by 2030. “Renewable energy is currently a major focus for us in the power sector,” he stated.
The two MoUs are expected to foster local capacity development within the renewable energy sector, creating jobs for Nigeria’s growing youth population. Adelabu emphasized the need for collaboration between technical colleges, polytechnics, and universities to ensure that graduates are equipped for job placements in this emerging sector.
Yan Zhezhu, Vice Chairman of MCC, expressed the company’s commitment to Nigeria, noting their previous projects in Oyo State, Maiduguri, and Kaduna. He highlighted the importance of continued cooperation with both state and federal governments.
