China has reiterated Beijing’s firm stance on the Taiwan question, describing it as the most sensitive and consequential issue in relations between China and the United States.
Speaking during a briefing on the China-U.S. summit and the common understandings reached between both sides, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the Taiwan issue featured prominently in discussions between the two countries, emphasizing that it remains an internal affair of China.
According to him, achieving complete national reunification is a long-standing aspiration of the Chinese people and a historic mission of the Communist Party of China.
“The mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China. This is a fact established since antiquity and an important part of the postwar international order,” Wang stated.
He urged the United States to strictly adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, stressing that Washington must honor its international obligations regarding Taiwan.
The Chinese foreign minister noted that the Taiwan issue remains central to the overall relationship between Beijing and Washington, warning that mishandling it could destabilize ties between the world’s two largest economies.
“If it is handled properly, the overall relationship will remain stable and both sides can focus more on mutually beneficial cooperation. Otherwise, clashes and even conflicts could arise, putting the entire relationship in jeopardy,” he said.
Wang also emphasized that both China and the United States recognize the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. However, he insisted that such stability cannot coexist with support for Taiwan independence.
“‘Taiwan independence’ and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water,” he noted.
He added that China’s impression from the summit was that the U.S. side understands Beijing’s concerns and does not support Taiwan moving toward formal independence.
The remarks come amid continued tensions in the Taiwan Strait and increasing international attention on relations between China and United States over security and geopolitical issues in the Indo-Pacific region.
Taiwan remains a self-governed island, but Beijing regards it as an inseparable part of Chinese territory under the one-China principle.
