The longstanding cultural relationship between Nigeria and China received fresh momentum on Saturday as the China Cultural Centre in Abuja hosted an exhibition celebrating Chinese traditions, lifestyle and heritage.

The 2026 “Seasonal Life & Harmonious China” Cultural Exhibition brought together cultural enthusiasts, officials and other guests for a programme featuring traditional performances, displays of Chinese cultural artefacts and interactive experiences.

The exhibition provided participants with an opportunity to explore elements of Chinese culture while highlighting the role of people-to-people interaction in strengthening relations between the two countries.

Cultural Counsellor and Director of the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, Yang Jianxing, said cultural engagement remains an important component of the relationship between Nigeria and China.

He pointed out that this year holds particular significance for the bilateral relationship, as Nigeria and China are marking 55 years of diplomatic relations, while 2026 has also been designated the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

Yang said the two countries have continued to expand cooperation in areas including culture, education, tourism and youth affairs, creating greater opportunities for their citizens to learn from one another.

He explained that the exhibition was conceived around the Chinese idea of living in accordance with the seasons, using cultural displays and activities to demonstrate the relationship between traditional Chinese life and the natural environment.

A major feature was the presentation of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, an ancient Chinese system that reflects observations of seasonal changes and the influence of nature on everyday life.

Yang said the concept promotes values such as environmental respect, responsible use of natural resources and harmonious coexistence, values which he noted can also be found in Nigerian traditions that place importance on nature, heritage, family and community.

He expressed optimism that events of this nature would encourage Nigerians to gain a deeper appreciation of Chinese traditions while creating more avenues for cultural interaction between the two countries.

Deputy General Manager of China Intercontinental Press and Media Limited, Guan Hong, said the exhibition demonstrated how cultural interaction can bring civilizations closer and create greater understanding among peoples.

Guan linked the programme to Liqiu, traditionally regarded in China as the beginning of autumn and one of the 24 solar terms.

She explained that the period is traditionally associated with the maturation of crops and anticipation of harvest, making it a fitting theme for an event celebrating cultural exchange and the shared aspirations of the Nigerian and Chinese peoples.

According to Guan, the exhibition was organised across five interactive sections, allowing visitors to engage with different aspects of Chinese life, including traditional culture, clothing, food inspired by nature, architectural craftsmanship and wellness practices.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Mukhtar Yawale Muhammed, used the occasion to draw attention to the broader opportunities emerging from Nigeria-China relations.

Muhammed said the concept of harmony at the heart of the exhibition reflected the increasingly multifaceted nature of bilateral cooperation.

He noted that the relationship between both countries was expanding beyond conventional economic engagement to encompass agriculture, scientific research, technological development and innovation.
