For thousands of years, tea has played a vital role in Chinese culture and civilization after it was discovered by Shen Nong, the divine farmer and inventor of medicine.

It is not just a beverage but has become a way of life embodying core values of Chinese culture such as putting people first and promoting harmony and coexistence.

The need to display Chinese tea culture and deepen the friendship between China and Nigeria is the reason for the “Tea for Harmony-Yaji Cultural Salon” held at the China Cultural Center in Abuja on Thursday.

Li Xuda, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in his remarks said the Salon presents a unique opportunity for cultural exchange through the unique fragrance and taste of Chinese tea.

His words, “Tea has not only become a popular drink around the world but has also acted as a special language of global communication. In every country, lots of people like to drink tea with their family members and friends. It is no exaggeration to say that drinking tea has become an important way of enjoying leisure time and social interaction for many people.

“Tea creates harmony, promotes harmonious relationships and mutual appreciation among people all over the world. Through this event, we want to share with our distinguished guests the unique and profound Chinese culture, the fragrance and good taste of the Chinese tea.”

Tea originated in China 5000 years ago and has become popular worldwide. From the ancient Silk Road, Tea-Horse Road, and Tea-ship Road to today’s Belt and Road Initiative and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, tea has transcended history and crossed borders, and is loved by people from all over the world.

There are more than 60 countries and regions that produce tea globally, and the number of tea drinkers exceeds 2 billion worldwide.
