Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved an immediate feasibility study for the proposed Azumini–Obeaku Seaport and Inland Waterways Corridor, a project he says could significantly reshape the state’s economic landscape.
The approval followed a meeting with a delegation from China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Limited, led by Mr. Nicolas Liu, where discussions focused on the viability and strategic importance of the maritime initiative.
Otti directed that the feasibility study be expedited, shortening the initial six to seven-month timeline proposed by the company. According to the governor, accelerating the study is necessary to fast-track implementation and unlock the project’s economic benefits.
He disclosed that the state government would simultaneously begin the process of obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals from key federal institutions, including the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, as well as seek clearance from the Presidency.
The governor also urged the project team to conduct an on-site assessment of the proposed location, noting that its proximity to the high sea and technical considerations such as dredging would be critical in determining feasibility.
Describing the project as transformative, Otti said the Azumini Seaport could serve as a major economic driver for Abia State while contributing to Nigeria’s broader maritime development agenda. He emphasized that successful delivery would depend on strong commitment, adequate funding, and effective partnerships.
Otti expressed appreciation to the delegation from China Harbour Engineering Company for their presentation and voiced optimism about the outcome of the feasibility study.
